Play Day!

Our court date was yesterday and the family we have been traveling with is in court today. So that means we have a free day to explore Cheboksary and just have some fun! Our gracious host (Peter the Great) was kind enough to drive us all around the city and show us many of the [...]

Court Day!

November 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Today was our day in court. The Supreme Court of Chevashiya to be more specific. It took about 3 hours and we were instructed to come back at 1:15PM for the ruling. There were 2 issues under consideration. One was the approval of our adoption of Sasha. The other was whether or not the judge [...]

As my last post left off we were boarding a van for a short drive from the train station in Shummerlya to the orphanage where Sasha has spent the last few years of his life. Another family from Wisconsin was also traveling with us as they were also adopting a child from the same orphanage. [...]

Hannah has no shoes!

We were supposed to arrive in Shimmerlya (via train) at around 5:22AM. The plan was that the conductor was supposed to wake us at 5AM so we could get ready to exit the train. The scheduled stop in Shummerlya was only for 2 minutes (that’s right, 2 minutes). So it was critical that we have [...]

Shummerlya is where Sasha’s orphanage is. The small city is about 2 hours outside of Cheboksary. We boarded the train in Moscow at around 7PM (Moscow time) for another 13+ hour ride accross the frozen Russian countryside. The girls were skeptical at first but it didn’t take long for them to settle in and embrace [...]

Well, we made it. It’s amazing how quickly you forget just how L O N G the flight is from Atlanta to Moscow. 11 hours. Sitting straight up. No sleep. Then of course there was the russian “diplomat” who had claimed our 3 center aisle seats as his own and then begged us to sit [...]

Back to Russia!

November 20, 2007 | 2 Comments

Well, we’re leaving this weekend. Bound for Russia. And this time we’re going to be bringing Sasha home! We’re very excited as you can imagine. But there’s a healthy dose of anxiety there as well to balance it all out. We’ve spent the past several weeks preparing the house (and ourselves) for his pending arrival. [...]

Today is August 15, 2007 and it’s Sasha’s birthday! He is 5 years old today. We’ve been wading through the remaining paperwork to finalize the dossier with the hopes of bringing him home soon. We can’t wait to introduce him to his new home and the rest of his family. He’s been a constant focus [...]

Eta Sashka!

This is another short video we took during our stay. As I’ve mentioned earlier, he really seemed to be fascinated by the computer. In this video he gets quite a kick out of seeing himself on camera!

Some treats always make a nice ice-breaker. He didn’t even need to speak or read english to understand what was in the bag. As a matter of fact he was even more than willing to share. In fact he insisted on everyone have an equal number. Oh, and he was also very particular about the [...]

This is the second of several videos we took during our visit with Sashka. He was pretty worn out after a full day of running around the house like a madman. He chased me, I chased him, we played hide-and-seek…. So, it was time to start winding down with a good book. Yeah right!.. He [...]

Sasha isn’t exactly what we expected. He’s much brighter and more energetic to say the least. And the size of his vocabulary really caught me off guard. He’s not even 5 yet but apparently he doesn’t realize that. There’s definitely a lot going on behind those big brown eyes and he’s not too shy about [...]

This is the first of several short videos we took of Sasha (Sashka) during our first trip to Russia. This was the first opportunity we had to actually meet this little guy and as you can imagine he stole our hearts immediately.

Everyone kept commenting on how much we looked alike. Marina even started to tell people that she suspected I had been to Russia before . Luda is the lady in the background. She was not only kind enough to open her entire home an family up to us during our stay in region, but she [...]

It didn’t take him too long to warm up to us. I think he has a thing for technical gadgetry (just like his Papa). He was mesmerized by the computer (a Mac of course) and he had our digital camera mastered in practically no time at all. In this picture we were supposed to be [...]

Our first full day in Moscow was a pretty full one. We weren’t scheduled to board our train for Chevashiya until late that evening so we tried to keep ourselves busy. Dima (our driver – and new friend) must be one of the best tour guides in all of Moscow. He took us to the [...]

We made it! The flight was L O N G. . . . I’ve never been able to sleep on a plane and Stacy didn’t fare much better. 11 hours in the air is a long time (especially when you’re not used to international travel). They certainly fed us well though. I managed to find [...]

Well, we made it this far. We’re in Atlanta waiting to board the plan to Moscow. I can’t say that we’re excited about this part (an 11 hour plane trip). We need to check in now so hopefully I’ll have some sort of connectivity when we get to Russia.

5 days and counting until we leave for Moscow. As you might imagine we’re full of emotions. It’s a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation with a little anxiety and stress mixed in for good measure. We really don’t know exactly what to expect. We know that it’s about 15 hours in the air to [...]

Sasha

This is Sasha. He’s the little guy that’s causing the lion’s share of excitement in our life these days. There’s a great deal of anxiety, uncertainty and nervous tension around our first trip to meet him next week. We’re really not sure what to expect since we’ve never been to Russia before. But somehow it [...]
